Mexican at Touche Hombre

For dinner my friends and I decided to go to a place called Touche Hombre. You cant book at this restaurant and we went on Thursday Night around 8pm and put our names down for the short 10 minute wait. They try and place you around the bar or by the window to have a drink – but once you get seated and get the food and drinks the wait will soon be forgotten. The atmosphere is buzzing – this place is always full no matter what time or day you go. The wait staff are friendly and always helpful. There is a live DJ which plays funky music and adds to the restaurant. Its a fun place to eat and just hang out with friends.

We had a mix of starters and tacos and finished off with the wonderful ice-cream sandwiches which were amazing!

Elotes Callejeros is the Mexican name for Grilled Corn! This Grilled Corn comes with Cilantro, Lime Zest and Chipotle Butter. I’m usually not a fan of grilled corn but this corn was pretty damn good! It was warm and buttery with just the right amount of lime zest and cilantro.

The Tostaditos above are the De Cangrejo which consists of Crab, Basil, Lime and Avocado. The other varieties include De Pollo – which has Spliced Chicken, Mango jam, toasted sesame seeds and chipotle mayo as well as De Hongo – which is made of mushrooms, truffle sour cream, jalapeno and cillantro.
They come with four portions and may look small but sure do pack a punch of flavour! The combinations are work and the flavours all complement each other. If I was you – I’d get each variety and try each of them because they sure are worth it! One of my favourite vegetables is mushrooms (you’ll be seeing a lot of mushroom dishes =p) and these mushroom tostaditos do not disappoint! The truffle in the sour cream adds the extra flavour and the jalapeno adds the zing!

We got a variety of tacos to try =)

The top two tacos are called the De Jaiba taco which has Soft Shell Crab, Sweet Corn, Mint, Pea Shoots and Lime. The bottom left taco is the De Tofu which is a veggie taco that consists of Grilled Tofu, Refried Beans, Romesco and Mexican Slaw. The bottom right taco is the De Pescado which is a fish taco consisting of Battered Day Boat Fish, Pickled Cucumber, Capers and Shallots.

At Touche Hombre you order each taco singly, but as you can see they are quite decently sized and you find yourself getting full after two…especially if you’ve had some of the smaller starters as we had. The Soft Shell Crab is delicious and the crab is really fresh tasting. The Tofu taco was an interesting mix but as I am not a fan of refried beans this wasn’t one of my favourites. The Fish taco was fantastic – the capers and the pickled cucumbers really made this taco! There are 11 tacos to choose from the menu – each with their interesting combinations and flavours.

We were pretty full as it is but the Ice Cream Sangas looked sooo tempting I convinced the other two to share the Ice Cream Sangas! We picked the Dulce de Leche – which is the Strawberry Parfait, Pistachio & Dulce de Leche and the Rice Pudding – which is Caramel & Rice Pudding Parfait, Cinnamon Sugar. The menu also  allows you to pick any 3 of the 4 flavours in the Seleccion de Los Tries.

They were both really tasty but my favourite was the Rice Pudding Ice Cream Sanga – The cinnamon flavour mixed with the rice pudding even though it sounds like it would not mix works really well together. I will definitely be going back if not for the food, for the Ice Cream Sangas!

Overall Touche Hombre is one of the best Mexican restaurants I have been to in Melbourne. The atmosphere together with the bubbly and friendly staff really make for a great night or even Sunday lunch out!
