Merchant  is a Venice inspired Guy Grossi Osteria style restaurant and one of the first times I visited this restaurant I was pleasantly surprised to see the man himself  there!  Ever since my first visit to Merchant, there have been many many more which is a testament to the consistency of  Merchant.

The restaurant is authentically Italian – the moment you step into the restaurant you are greeted with an  enthusiastic ”Bonjourno.”

If you sit around the kitchen or at the seats surrounding it, you can see the chefs busily preparing your food. The restaurant is busy at both lunch and dinner times and the consistent crowds of people dining there at both these times speak volumes about  its popularity. I personally prefer this Grossi restaurant over the more established  Grossi Florentino – The Grill.

Merchant’s food  is spectacularly delicious and true to its Italian roots. The Pumpkin Tortellini and the Crab Bigoli dishes are two of my favourite dishes and those are the type of pasta dishes that first come to mind when I get cravings for pasta.  The pasta is made in house and the tortellini just melts in your mouth. It is both fresh and delectable!

Of all the places I have visited in the world one of my favourites is Venice and this restaurant brings back fond memories of that great city.   The name of this restaurant is most likely a reference to those famous “Merchants of Venice” who played such an important part in Venetian history.   The feel and atmosphere is reminiscent of the restaurants and cafes in Piazza San Marco (St Mark’s Square) and the menu has some uniquely Venetian inspiration.  With  a massive gondola fronting the restaurant and being located near the base of the Rialto the references to Venice are numerous!  It truly is like having a little bit of Venice right here in the heart of the Melbourne CBD!
